The Brakes
and New Wheels
With new calipers required (as 1 was faulty) it was a opportunity to upgrade to some extra stopping power, I managed to source a set of drilled and grooved Red dot discs and pads, but as they only specified fitment for the ‘Lotus’ Cortina hub I wasn’t sure if it was going to be straight forward.
Fortunately, with a bit off persuasion they were seated.
To spruce up the new but rather dull calipers, a lick of caliper paint was in order.
With the car jacked up and the wheels off, the surrounding area was carefully masked off.
Standard cars may require removal of the caliper for painting but we had the luxury of easy access while fitted.
As the calipers were new, there was no need to do the usual wire brushing with brake cleaner beforehand.
For the painting, I acquired the help of my mate John, a steady hand and abundance of patience is a must if you want a good finish.
Armed with a tin of yellow caliper paint and 2 brushes we set to work, applying a thin coat ensuring a sound cohesive base, 2 further coats were applied approximately 20 minutes apart(drying time will vary on conditions).
Both calipers were checked off by both of us to ensure no missed bits.
Job done.
With the brakes looking so good, the old scuffed alloys had to go, a set of Fox Racing rims on 195/50/15 tyre’s were sought. These are a nice race weight proportioned wheel in a trick platinum finish to contrast the bright yellow of the brakes and bodywork.
